Le présent de l'indicatif
Niveau Débutant
(des verbes réguliers)
Avant de commencer, il est nécessaire de préciser, qu'en français, les verbes sont classés en trois groupes selon leur terminaison à l'infinitif.
En fonction de leur groupe, ils se conjuguent différemment.
Before starting, it is necessary to specify that in French, verbs are classified into three groups according to their infinitive ending. Depending on their group, they are conjugated differently.
Let's take a closer look at these three groups...
Part I - Les 3 groupes
Parler - to speak
Manger - to eat
Chanter - to sing
Présenter - to present
Payer - to pay
❌ Aller → 3rd group it's the only exception
Le 1er groupe
First Group I Regular
Comment les reconnaître ?
A la forme infinitive (c'est à dire lorsqu'ils ne sont pas conjugués), il se terminent par -ER.
How to recognize them?
In the infinitive form (i.e. when they're not conjugated), they end in -ER.
Le 2ème groupe
Second Group I Regular
Comment les reconnaître ?
A la forme infinitive, il se terminent
par -IR.
How to recognize them?
In the infinitive form, they end in -IR.
Finir - To finish
Choisir - to choose
Agir - to act
Réussir - to succeed
Obéir - to obey
❌ Be aware that many verbs ending in 'ir' are from the 3rd group (dormir, sortir, partir, ...)
Être, Avoir, Aller, Faire, Dire, Pouvoir, Vouloir, Savoir, Voir, Venir, Devoir, Prendre, Mettre, Connaître, Croire, Lire, Écrire, Boire, Vivre, Tenir, Ouvrir, Partir, Sentir, Dormir, Sortir ...
Le 3ème groupe
Third Group I Irregular
Comment les reconnaître ?
Ce sont tous les autres... et ils sont irréguliers. Ils peuvent terminer par -oir, -re, mais aussi par -ir.
How to recognize them?
These are all the others... and they are irregular.
They can end in -oir, -re, but also in -ir.
Part III - Présent
Verbe du 1er Groupe (-er)
To "conjugate" the verb in the present tense, you need to keep the "stem" of the verb, which is the part that doesn't change, and add the correct ending, which is the verb ending that corresponds to the appropriate pronoun.
PARLER
In the verb PARLER: PARL is the stem of the verb.
We remove the ending "-ER" and add the correct ending based on the subject.
Part IV - Présent
Verbe du 2ème Groupe (-ir)
Same logic for second-group verbs, but the endings is different from de 1st group.
Part II - When to Use the Present tense in French
Décrire des actions en cours / Describing actions in progress
Je mange une pomme. I am eating an apple.
Exprimer des vérités générales ou des faits habituels / Expressing general truths or habitual actions
Le soleil est jaune. The sun is yellow.
Parler de faits futurs proches / Talking about near-future events
